Misunderstood

She said a word

in the cool of the night

he heard it wrong

now there’s heat and there’s spite

now a word can be handled

with love and with care

but another can be

flung like a dagger in the air

but the word wedges deeper

than the dagger ever will

it will cut and will carve

to see  more than blood spill

oh to be misunderstood

in the heat of the night

no more love understanding

they were ready for a fight

  1. Wonderfully written. The blend of this is a good impact of the words….*sigh…sometimes the words in misunderstanding can very well “cut deep”

  2. Too bad we can live our lives like a small Hollywood sitcom…if we got the lines wrong…we’d just reshoot the shot until it turned out right….but we cannot so sometiimes as in you other poem I read tonight…we long for our youth…when things were simpler…loved both of these poems…you made me recall moments now and in my past…thanks for the array of memories.

  4. Nice, Leslie. Words have such power. They can cut or heal, and the effects can last a lifetime. We would be wise to be cautious how we fling them about.

  5. Sometimes our emotions get the better of us, and the building fire drives us to things we do not really want. In but an instant, words can cut us clean through. As you say:

    “but the word wedges deeper

    than the dagger ever will”

Well put, and well written. A wonderful, if saddening, poem.
