You are the source of life for our people.
We gather here as one people, purify, make offerings… burn our dead
send little lights on ripples hoping they will magnify into blessings
waves with no answers return
brown filth flows to our shore
from which our children drink deep
this is the life of the river…

Hi, Leslie. I don’t get over here as often as I would like, but when I do, you always seem to have something very thought provoking. This one is no exception; it continues to weave its magic even as we leave the page. Well done.

Powerful 55.
Watched Al Gore last night. It’s going to get a whole lot worse, and the powers that be just keep on denying global warming and climate change.

Oh, how powerful this is. Even knowing what you say is true about the river, its draw is so universal that even I feel a pulling there. If ever I am fortunate enough to visit India I will stand near there (will not touch the water) and will recall your poem-55.
Might I add that I love the “texture” of your blog. It is the best design I have seen at WordPress. Just beautiful.

very powerful, indeed! an inexcusable situation in this day and age, especially when there are filtered “straws” which are very inexpensive and make river water safe for drinking as it is sucked through the filtered “straw.” clean water world-wide is my passion. thank you for highlighting the issue in your poem which reminds us how many uses the water has.

Having ‘lived’ on the Ohio River several years (scow), I can identify with some of this…but it would take me more than 55 words to describe doing laundry, making coffee, washing dishes and bathing in that river. Yes, it IS a way of life.
Glad to ‘see’ you now and then, Moondustwriter!
PEACE!
