we crossed paths at dawn you and I
you in search of anything that might satisfy
gnawing of winter’s constant hunger
*
the cold seemed little impediment
there was something in doe eyes
that determination could not disguise
*
I could not reach you through cold glass
I willed a full belly to break repast
my hands empty of all but understanding
*
you caught me in your eye
too close to blink away surprise
we crossed paths at dawn you and I
Through the glass
a world beyond frozen dreams
more than meets the eye

“People are like stained – glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.”

What a magical almost ancient moment…one that will be preserved in the glass of your memory forever I should imagine…crystallised and certain….beautiful piece Moonie

Yes I agree their true beauty shines if there is a light within.

WOW! The image of the eyes of the doe and the human, with the glass between–real or symbolic–is a powerful one! The world could stop rotating in that instant. How beautifully you’ve woven in hunger and desire! I read the final haiku, after the image of frost, struck me as a separate poem, a comment on the first. I believe there is always more, and love how you used the phrase “than meets the eye” as a follow up to the first poem.

Thanks Susan. yes the haiku just kind of jumped onto the page – perhaps the voyeur from the upstairs window 🙂

Love ‘you caught me in your eye’ phrase as if doe captured the human…not opposite…giving the image of animal the power…great!

What a beautiful encounter. The doe will be so grateful when the grass begins to grow. So much winter hunger for the critters.

There is something magic in that moment of understanding when you look a wild creature in the eye and they know you are not a threat and you know you have experienced something almost too beautiful for words.

This really resonates with me….as I have deer very close to my yard all the time. See them mostly at dusk and dawn. Many times our eyes meet….and I feel the connection. I always enjoy this crossing of paths.

Mary glad you know. The last time I was this close it was with a fawn who was too busy looking for goodies to see me an arms length away.
