Without You #mothersday #poetry

some children fall in the cracks

swept up in loving arms

(for you) mothering comes easy

loving is never a “task”

Grandmothers take small hands

steer us clear of life’s storm

water their little one’s garden

never says “can’t” always “Can”

her memory flows over sweetly

wishing she still was near

heaven is ever the richer

Grandmother your love was so dear

In my discussions with people, I rarely find someone whose grandmother wasn’t an influence in their lives. Some of us were raised by our grandmothers and our mothers were either out of the picture or were more concerned about their own lives. To the women who in their elderly years dusted off their tennie runners and game playing skills and most of all loved us for who we were.

  1. Hi Truedessa – grandmothers certainly play a huge role .. we saw them, and spent holiday times with them … but they didn’t look after us – but their influence is around now – I can feel it in my bones!

Mother’s Day is special … but then everyday is mother’s day … take care – cheers Hilary

  2. ah…those hands did steer us clear of life’s storms (in childhood even a little quarrel with a friend was a big issue)…a beautiful one Leslie…

  4. I was fortunate enough to have 4 grandparents and 3 great grandparents alive when I was born. While I barely knew one, the remaining three grandmothers/great-grandmothers had a profound influence on my life all the way to adulthood, the last one dying only a few years ago when I was forty-six years old. Truly a blessing.

  5. Funnily enough my memory of both grandparents is very dim even though they lived with us at different stages. So I feel a bit nostalgic because of this lovely tribute to grandmothers thank you … 🍀

  6. Mother is both a noun and a verb – I would imagine it is a privilege to be either and special when someone cares in an unconditional way – here’s To all the people who say ‘can’ and let us bloom 🌸

  7. Leslie you are lucky you were able to spend time with your grandmother. My Dad’s mother, I think died before I was born. Mom’s mother died when I was seven or eight. We could not visit grandma or grandpa, because my dad’s job was far away from Bengal.
I loved your poem and wished I was as lucky as you.
    Happy ‘Mother’s Day.’ Leslie. 🙂
