Uncovering Needs #elderlyissues #atozchallenge

I have found that working with the elderly is like digging for treasure – I am never disappointed with what I find.

There are times (especially with dementia) that we must uncover their needs or what makes them happy.

Every person has things that have meaning. It could be an activity like going to the market and remembering days gone by. With one client who was almost bed bound, I realized there were certain activities that gave her energy to get out of bed.

I first noticed change when a neighbor stopped in for a short “hello.” My client was upbeat the rest of the day.

The neighbor had brought flowers so we spent time thinking of something nice to do. We baked cookies and my client wrote a card.

The next week we made valentines for her son and her husband. Wow I noticed color in her face.

What I uncovered was she liked doing things  for people.

It’s also fun to uncover things about a person that maybe no one knows.

Here are some ideas to mix up their day and keep it interesting:

Writing his/her memoir

Writing cards to friends

Drawing/ coloring

singing together

Folding laundry ( I have lovely conversations with my clients when doing chores)

How have you been keeping things interesting during the Co-Vid “Stay in Place”???

Thank you for visiting Moondustwriter. One of the many exciting things I've had the honor of doing is writing and publishing in multiple genres (including education) in E. African for E. Africa. As a writer, it is a thrill to write for children (on all continents) who want to learn. I've been part of the blogging community for more than 13 years. Some old timers may remember the award winning (2011 Twitter Shorty ) blog community - One Stop Poetry. I was the co-producer of that fast growing blog community. I am a published writer, poet, artist and photographer. I have written, as well as edited, for periodicals, radio, blogs and fellow writers. There are many facets to this moon - my joy is in meeting you!

  1. My mother was not as physically strong as she wanted to be in the later years of her life. But she was still active in her own way. She was a painter, she’d like to draw and she made thousands of handmade toques to give to the homeless.
But she also spent hundreds of hours creating handmade cards to give to her friends and relatives. She was all types of techniques and each one was stamped from her studio which was the spare bedroom. I have a stack of cards and she is in my mind every time I look at each one of them. She had such a joy creating them with her friends in mind and family. I am certain her cards will be treasured for many years to come; she is gone but she’s not forgotten.
My point being is that it brought her joy to do what she could and not focussing on what she couldn’t.

  2. It is so true. Sometimes, we have to rediscover these things, because dementia ganges the personlaity of people.
My dad has dementia, and some of the things he once liked, he doesn’t like anymore. So I suppose that some things he once didn’t like, he now might like.
    It’s a journey.
