Restored #forgiveness #poetry #uganda

They curse the dry unyielding ground

stubble from impotent crops remain

toppled huts call out in anger

“we will never be whole again

they have maligned our children

destroyed our spirit”

only bitter weeds grow strong

***

lovingly they pour water on hardened ground

fingers soiled with ancestral dirt

music filters through new huts

golden maize dances to life’s song

children’s laughter reaches blue expanse

“we are known as the place of the light”

Pasqual’s face radiates hope

The LRA displaced the Acholi tribes in Northern Uganda. Not one family was untouched. “I was abducted as a child.” “My wife was raped at 9.” “We ran over the bodies of dead family members.” “Our village was destroyed.”

For the Acholi there are two choices – bitterness or forgiveness.

In no way is the forgiveness easy but only through it can life begin fresh and new.

Only in love can a new song be written in the heart of these strong people.

“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.  Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, even as God in Christ forgave you.”
Ephesians 4:31 & 32

Kindness #children #atozchallenge

mama’s busy with the farm

rain blocked the way

we jump life’s puddles

we  cross them together

today on my back

tomorrow holding hands

The Acholi are hard working and determined people. The women will work the farm during the day, clean up , then carry their produce to market each evening. The young girls sweetly care for their siblings even those still in diapers. What determination we see in those so young. So proud of the kindness of children.

Are you doing the A to Z challenge? Are you determined to finish strong?

We are near to the halfway mark – bravo.

Butterfly #children #Atozchallenge

Alive with color

enamoured by this small creature

smile on her face

We use the puppets named Bethany (butterfly)  and Judah (Lion) to help teach our lessons. Puppets have an amazing ability to involve even shy children.

One of the first Acholi words I learned was La Fou Fou (Butter fly)

The Story of a Village #photography #poetry

There were children

that we didn’t hear

there were mamas

burdens to bear

there was water

miles carried away

there was sunshine

 too busy everyday

                                                                                   child at water pump

a well where people praise

water on their heads

children stop to play

we call her Pawell

laughter heard today

sonshine spills from hearts

Layers of Uganda #photography #haiku #Uganda

storm clouds march forward

savanna goes on forever

layered her pain

The layers of Uganda – A woman is sorrowful at the loss of her newborn child but she does not cry, fierce storms give little notice, and the horizon seems endless.

Ant Hill #Uganda #poetry

 hand tickles the clouds

toes clutch creases of dirt

ants raise their heads confused

how did that ant get so big?

children play hide n seek

*mono peeks around the building

footballs rush over high grass

older boys chase fun

village women pump water

Pawell never sits still

* mono = white person

Water #poetry #drought #Uganda

one blue cup each

flows easily through her hands

dry river beds

laughter’s pure reflection

sing song they learn A B Cs

*

so young to be old

internal Acholi’s strength

Nile clouds my vision

*

If I share a handful of their giggles, would you share a handful of precious water?

One Way #Uganda

I have dotted my eyes

and crossed my teas

some of the animals

made me sneeze

what I hold now

happily in my hand

is a one way ticket

to a distant land

of Uganda I write

and hope to serve

the people Acholi

our love so deserve

As I close this A to Z challenge, I am finishing up the process and preparing to go to the land of the Acholi in Northern Uganda. This week we meet with people who will hopefully give us homes for  the South Sudanese children.

Blogging is a great way to journal so here’s the beginning of a new journey to work with African children.

We appreciate your dear prayers.

Our Translator

Like a morning glory

she radiates beauty

a natural gift for language

she wants to be a teacher

singing and dance comes to mind

when I think of her smile

wrap up a gift

filled with her dreams

Talia is a 20 year old young woman who lives full time at the orphanage in Gulu. She is studying to be a teacher ( she takes classes in her free time.) I can’t tell you how many times she took time away from her chores to translate lessons for me. That smile is part of her everyday beauty. If I could pay for her classes to be a teacher, I would in a heartbeat as this young woman is dedicated and intelligent.
