The day you called me

to traverse this upward climb

I was fragile

uncoiling from a womb

*

The day you pulled me

with your strength of will

to face this danger

I was uncertain

*

The day you coerced me

forward and upward

no matter the cost

I wanted assurance

*

The day you pushed me

over the edge

with your lying ways

I found my depth

*

The day you thought

I was at your mercy

you slipped

 undone

Nautilus

This year for  A to Z challenge, I am using the Nautilus as my inspiration all month. The shell has many chambers (at least enough to fit all the letters.)  You will find poetry,  You will find some dark stuff (as I am attempting to branch into the horror genre), You will also see a smattering of short stories or prose (some with children in mind) others as lessons that we can all learn from. I look forward to  meeting you and getting to know some talented writers over this month long writing journey. Please check over at the A to Z challenge and see what they are up to; they are a fine bunch of folks.

Today

I am a butterfly

free to dance

skipping from flower to flower

basking in the sun

Today

I am a robin

free to sing

notes float in the breeze

delighting listening ears

Today

I am a daisy

free to smile

opening my face to the day

happy bouquet of beauty

Today

I am a child

free to laugh

spinning in the warmth of spring

dancing with the butterflies

singing with the robins

smelling my daisy bouquet

reflction

Wouldn’t you feel this way too?

It’s a gloomy day

not so much because of the rain

well maybe that’s a contributing factor

today was midterms

I am waiting on my acceptance into Uni

my paper got eaten by the dog (no really)

my one hundred and fifty dollar leather shoes got soaked

my blue jeans that cost a mint are now purple

how can I concentrate on my tests

when I am a dripping mess?

my clothes are ruined

my hair is laying flat against my head

“Hey mom I think I’m sick

something’s wrong cuz everything looks chartreuse”

Leaning Tower – Robby Hayton

You lean too far

you drop

nuances

into my hands

like cherry blossoms

too heavy for the bough

you are not strong enough

at least not for now

Graceful you reach toward the sky

in an upward spiral you grow

touching the clouds upward so high

graceful you reach toward the sky

touching the clouds upward so high

one weakness you have that we know

gracefully you reach toward the sky

in an upward spiral you grow

The Leaning Tower of Pisa – a campanile, or freestanding bell tower, of the cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa, known worldwide for its unintended tilt to one side. It is situated behind the Cathedral and is the third oldest structure in Pisa’s Cathedral Square (Piazza del Duomo) after the Cathedral and the Baptistry. The tower’s tilt began during construction, caused by an inadequate foundation on ground too soft on one side to properly support the structure’s weight. The tilt increased in the decades before the structure was completed, and gradually increased until the structure was stabilized (and the tilt partially corrected) by efforts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. took 20 years to build because of war.

Its the time of the year to breathe in the beauty of the cherry blossom. There are many activities to enjoy at the cherry blossom festival in Washington DC.

Gnawing Nervousness … #shortyaward #twitter #atoz

One Stop Poetry - 2011 winner in arts
One Stop Poetry – 2011 winner in arts

It was crazy. One Stop Poetry was a “little blog” on Blogger. Four of us created this community. That then grew on Twitter. This group for poets, then writers and artists, got huge overnight. A team of  8 people (Adam Dustus, Pete Marshall, Brian Miller, Leslie Moon, Gay Cannon, Claudia Schoenfeld, Jessica Kristie, Chris Galford) who never met, got the notice in March 2011 – “You are going to New York. You are selected as one of the six finalists for the Twitter Shorty Award.” My heart soared, my stomach sank. It was too much to hope for  considering we had just started in July.  As I got out of the limo in Times Square, I saw the smiling faces of the people I considered friends and colleagues standing around dressed to the nines. I shook my head the illusion vanished, but i could feel the thousand or more were with us.  I opened my eyes looking for Brian Miller and Adam Dustus wishing that Pete Marshall, our other founder, could have made it across the pond.

“It’s here. It’s now. I am really walking into the auditorium at Times Square.”

It’s not hard for me to imagine things, but this was one of those magical, real moments when they call your name and you’re actually awake. They were calling ours, “One Stop Poetry.”  There was so much chaos they couldn’t get me to the front of the auditorium in time to join my friends and accept the award. It didn’t matter we (each member of the community) were (virtually) standing at the podium as a collective accepting the award.

We tweeted to our supporters “We Won the Twitter Shorty Award for Arts” That tweet circled the globe to poets, writers, and artists.  Each of those folks were part of this. It was a moment to celebrate with them.

***

After the awards, I met some other entrepreneurial types who had worked hard to get recognized, and I met a few who obviously stood out in the celebrity arena. Today, I read the first tweets I sent after our name had been called and felt the same pride and excitement. One Stop Poetry had done what we had sought out to do which was creating a community and giving a voice to the poet/writer even if he or she was in the beginning stages of his/her writing journey.

To you who are waiting on the edge of your heels to find out who will be the recipient of tonight’s award – enjoy the moment and celebrate anticipation’s finest moment.

“And the winner is…”

Editing – All in a day #atoz #editing #shortstory

angry-monkey-7399791

At last chapter 42. One chapter and 1200 words from ending this crazy beginning. The beginning ahh I almost remember it like a new bride. I danced, I sang with all the newness of  the plot, the interesting characters, a compelling read.

But too soon, the commas and the semicolons, not to mention the typos and misspellings, made my fingers bleed. Jealously, the main characters wanted a piece of the action; no proverbial monkey on my back. They sank their rabid teeth into my neck. Like the barbarous task masters of old, they whipped and hurled me into a dark spiral. Down, down, down – I went. The novel harbingers were portending my doom.  The once friendly laughter was dark and sinister; the whipping sounds stung my ears. I couldn’t wait for the end of each day, though often they threatened me if I left my perch.

“No tears. There is no time. Move forward. Make haste.” I smelled the stench of their breath.

“Okay,” I whispered to myself, but one taskmaster heard me and grabbed my wrist hard.

“Next time, I hear a complaint, I will break your wrist,” he growled. “NO Stopping!” I felt a bite in my neck, which I knew meant business. The blinds were being closed shut,  the shadows of doom closed in.

I got out one of my references ” I have to consult my…”

“You don’t consult anyone or anything.”

“Wait just a minute. Your master, the guy who wrote this thing, wants it to read well. You had better let me consult my references so that I can make you look good.”

“Oh, alright then,” he said almost sheepishly, the monkey backed off, more light came in through the shades.

I didn’t want to make the characters look good at word count  38,535.  I wanted to kill them – all of them.  Silently, I mused,”Ring their necks and let the reader see what they are like in ‘real life.’

“I must be going crazy,” I screamed at the monkey on my back.

“Okay, who do I start with?” I stabbed my ink pen at the different names on my hit list. “Hmm, he’s not carrying his weight. I say be gone with this character, write him out of the story.”

I heard a collective gasp, “No, you can’t do that. We could be next.”

“Hmm, good idea. Monkey you are walking on thin ice.” I heard a screech and felt a lightness on my shoulders, the blinds creaked open,  the stench lifted.

I can’t say they always behaved themselves, but then neither did I.

I did notice the occasional cup of coffee at my desk, and the blinds were opened periodically.

“Guys,  your master is calling today; you had better be on your best behavior.”

Yes sir, we are just ahead of schedule. The… The characters,” I smiled at the monkey, the task masters and harbingers, “are keeping me on my toes.”

He laughed almost like he understood this crew. Hmm, maybe he did.
