Monet and Poplars #haiku #art

Monet influenced so many writers and artists and continues to do so. The Carpe Diem prompt is “Poplars”

Cast Off #poetry #photography

Today I cast off my dreams

leaving them on yesterday’s wake

did I have the perfect form

or was I making a mistake

*

today I waded deep into sorrow

jigsaw puzzle pieces mismatched

wishing I could ignite the driftwood

you were reality’s dreadful catch

*

today I danced to a new beat

loosened my hair into the breeze

laughed away yesterday’s tight rope

casting-off from you an ease

Don’t Look Back #poetry #photography #relationships

Those are my bridges burning

in the rear view mirror

deep breath

 someday it will end

Rocks to climb

they are before us

we’ll get hurt

through life’s turns and bends

desert rocks

put away the thoughts

that are behind now

that pain can never

change

keep driving toward

tomorrow

the clouds promise

clearing rain

Golden Mesa

then one day

look in the mirror

reach for beauty

once out of range

dance in moonlight

embrace the forest

new life

blots out old stains

pink rose

Each week Poet’s United provides great prompts. This week the prompt is mirror. Susan also encouraged us to integrate a true story. poets united

Poetry allows a writer to say things he/she would be criticized for saying. Suffice it to say I easily as a divorced, unemployed, uninsured, mother (did I mention homeless) could have drown in the “system.” Fortunately, I had a role model who, rather than depend on a system that makes one weak,  struck out into the ocean alone.

My hand, filled with compassion, goes out to those who have had to swim in the sea of adversity with nothing but their determination to make it.

The WordPress Daily Post Challenge offered a great prompt for today “Sink or Swim”

I remember… #writing #writingchallenge

bucket of tears

memories cascading over memories

caught in a 3 by 3 black and white image

toddling in white

the camera moves forward

or is it backward

capturing the larger scene

tears that fall like waterfalls

the smallness of her age cannot

gather the drops in her bucket

so she looks to the source

and smiles

sun beams radiate from her face

the tears continue to flow

but in that radiance there is a goal

the camera pans out further

a man carries off his belongings

in two boxes and a large suitcase

he doesn’t look back

at the toddler in white

or the waterfall

steam rises off his black car as he zooms away from us

forever

years later my fingers caress the silk ties he left behind

to me that is hope he will return

she knows in her heart the date and occasion that each tie was given to him

but there are no more waterfalls

just a desert wasteland

of dried up emotion

my white togs grow grey with time

and poverty overwhelms us

and yet we are happy

in a simple world of black and white

brown and grey

the camera pans over a sea of paint

little fingers dabble

a woman’s hands portray life

on canvas after canvas

and life and hope and even a bit of love are reborn

upon a brush filled with color

the camera pans back

walls hold colorful beauty

eyes and smiles peruse the canvas

we still can’t always get enough money for clothing or food

but the stories on the paint filled canvases

are more

than

enough

for this not so little girl

and her talented mother

Dead on Delivery #poetry #photography #poetsunited

roses

petals pulled away my heart

spikes picketed into my soul

waters that once so freely flowed

dried up and blew away

***

petals pulled away my heart

love it seemed between us too

wrapped up with a bow

came dead upon delivery

**

petals pulled away my heart

words inscribed in red

buried long ago

none can unearth love’s end

**

Petals pulled away my heart

locked up by your deception

one of us must go

I’ll gladly take the keys

I love the visual of locks and keys especially the old fashioned kind. Today’s poem was inspired by Kim at Poet’s United / Verse First the prompt – “Lock”

Life less #pain #love #poetry

what does the besieged (silenced) heart do to flee destruction?

“yes I feel it too”

I said to no one

in caged, abysmal loneliness

every foot -step echoed a cadenced

“no turning back”

“all is gone”

“where did love go?”

“was it ever?”

when he looked in my eyes

did he embrace another?

daily I flogged my heart

that I might feel

for numbness had become

my closest ally

(friends had all but fled)

“what if death became

my final offering?”

it would have been your moment of celebratory height

(you play the martyr well)

now through this pain  encased

I feel again

I raise my cracked crystal glass

(ironically a wedding present)

“YES -I will live!!!”

you will need to find victory

in another’s destruction

for my life is worth more than that alabaster vase

you purchased for my remains

The End in Sight #poetry

when the bond is broken in a relationship it is time to pack up and move on

the gold band broke in pieces

too easily

pictures of a couple

in separate frames

bottle where tears collected

shattered from overuse

dreams discarded in rumpled newsprint

don’t look back

our love was already gone

The Inheritance #microfiction

She’d known it the moment he walked in the door from work. It was the stain of pink lipstick that she always laundered or the scent of Beautiful captive on his wrinkled tailored shirt. It was different. Today his eyes said something they had never said in the brief months they had been married. They spoke of desire and excitement and …

“Why did he marry me? Obviously not for  my loving dedication.” she wanted to pound in frustration on his chest but she dutifully told him “dinner will be ready in half an hour dear!”
She tried to keep up the small talk during dinner.
She moved the food around her plate. As she was putting a slice of homemade apple pie in front of him she asked “So was it good?”

“What the meal? Sure it was fine.”
” No – the sex, her…”
“What” he looked at her with a look of anger but he couldn’t mask the other. Admission…
“Caught ya (again) ” her look implied.
In that moment she knew something else it was her inheritance that he had married her for.
“What a fool” she thought.
Her friends several years ago had created a fable that she would inherit a great deal of money when her grandfather died.
It was true she would inherit a small house, but that was not worth a huge amount of money.
The fable had died when an old lover had admitted that he wanted her for her money.
The friends stopped the rumors – they knew all along this guy was no good. She always wondered if that was why they had created the tale.
“How had Jake gotten wind of this ridiculous tale?”
“Fool” she smirked again.
She decided to play a bit of cat and mouse
“I believe this length of time calls for an annulment.
The good news you won’t have to support me at all.
I will go to a lawyer tomorrow.”
“No wait why it was a mere flirtation she means nothing!”
“Neither do I – you probably spent more time undressing her than you do in our entire lovemaking.”
“But that is not why…”
“Go have your women you will be free to dally.”
“I don’t want free I want a family with you…”

“You can find some bimbo tomorrow who will have your brats.”

She called her best friend, packed her bags, and drove off in her old, rusty Chevy Malibu. That night she never looked back.

He kicked himself for being such a fool. He should have waited until they had a child or two.

He got the blond one pregnant. She was ok looking and her family had a little property.

Then he saw her his ex-wife. She was beautiful driving a red Jaguar XKE.

She looked happy.

He heard her grandfather had recently died and left her with the little house which happened to be sitting on top of oil.

She had millions and any man she wanted.

“What a fool I was” he shouted to no one at all.
