Gnawing Nervousness … #shortyaward #twitter #atoz

One Stop Poetry - 2011 winner in arts
One Stop Poetry – 2011 winner in arts

It was crazy. One Stop Poetry was a “little blog” on Blogger. Four of us created this community. That then grew on Twitter. This group for poets, then writers and artists, got huge overnight. A team of  8 people (Adam Dustus, Pete Marshall, Brian Miller, Leslie Moon, Gay Cannon, Claudia Schoenfeld, Jessica Kristie, Chris Galford) who never met, got the notice in March 2011 – “You are going to New York. You are selected as one of the six finalists for the Twitter Shorty Award.” My heart soared, my stomach sank. It was too much to hope for  considering we had just started in July.  As I got out of the limo in Times Square, I saw the smiling faces of the people I considered friends and colleagues standing around dressed to the nines. I shook my head the illusion vanished, but i could feel the thousand or more were with us.  I opened my eyes looking for Brian Miller and Adam Dustus wishing that Pete Marshall, our other founder, could have made it across the pond.

“It’s here. It’s now. I am really walking into the auditorium at Times Square.”

It’s not hard for me to imagine things, but this was one of those magical, real moments when they call your name and you’re actually awake. They were calling ours, “One Stop Poetry.”  There was so much chaos they couldn’t get me to the front of the auditorium in time to join my friends and accept the award. It didn’t matter we (each member of the community) were (virtually) standing at the podium as a collective accepting the award.

We tweeted to our supporters “We Won the Twitter Shorty Award for Arts” That tweet circled the globe to poets, writers, and artists.  Each of those folks were part of this. It was a moment to celebrate with them.

***

After the awards, I met some other entrepreneurial types who had worked hard to get recognized, and I met a few who obviously stood out in the celebrity arena. Today, I read the first tweets I sent after our name had been called and felt the same pride and excitement. One Stop Poetry had done what we had sought out to do which was creating a community and giving a voice to the poet/writer even if he or she was in the beginning stages of his/her writing journey.

To you who are waiting on the edge of your heels to find out who will be the recipient of tonight’s award – enjoy the moment and celebrate anticipation’s finest moment.

“And the winner is…”

Darkness All Along #oneshotwednesday

Look at me a tragic flaw

assembled by nature

as a blemish

an embarrassment

surely not meant to embrace

rather shun

***

you don’t know me

you say you do

but you don’t

not really

who does?

no one!

*

Take a closer look

look into nothing

For that is what I am

my heart an abysmal void

a web darkly spun

*

I live life alone

on my own terms

sample what you like

there is nothing worth having

 better escape, quickly, run!

*

This is my curse

a world of loveless, nothingness

drawn into dark

away from the light of hope

don’t bother there is no sun

*

But then

it is what they wanted

chosen and delivered to me

an anomaly

a freak

being no one

Where Stars are Born #oneshotwednesday

I looked up at a star one day

and looked it in the eye

where did you come from

I had to say

before you radiated beauty in the sky?

***

She laughed a bit and blushed some too

with a grin she took my hand

She said

I’ll show you around a bit

show you how I was planned

***

We sailed across the cosmic waves

sorrow  left behind

saw untold beauty

as we journeyed

far and wide

***

We danced and sang

with stars we played

followed comets

in their trail

turned planets on their spindles

and drank the milky way

***

She said let me show you why you’ve come

her point was clear and strong

for as I gazed

I was amazed

it was you and I all along

***

At that moment when our eyes first touched

and sparks flew in the night

they gathered

into one strong burst

before they took to flight

***

she laughed and said “it was great love

that put me in the sky”

she hugged me much

a giggle too

and then she said “goodbye”

Read Behind Those Eyes #oneshotwednesday

You can’t see

behind vibrant blue

there is a story to be read

in those eyes

windows to the soul

flecks of stars

but not like before …

***

Just a day

one of those

like any other

in a moment

metal and flesh become one

a bloody fusion

so much you can see

that you aren’t looking for

so much is gone

that you had not known

never seen in those eyes

***

what does it mean when …

life is ebbing

like water it flows

through invisible fingers

life poured on the pavement

gravel pitted knees

praying at Heaven’s door

watching, begging

darkness taking it’s claim

no life remains

no energy left to play

no last lover’s kiss

“she’s gone” they proclaim

Why? for she’d lived so few days

The Lover’s Song #oneshotwednesday

Awakened in the morning

serenaded by my favorite sound

“I love you so my darling

you are my heart’s desire”

***

Rambling through my day

softly humming my lover’s song

clinging to the phrase

“I am his heart’s desire”

***

A moment that I take

I dream of us awake

passion there is still

“you are my heart’s desire”

***

Prepared to meet his gaze

fragrance fills the air

reminders of my love

hanging here and there

***

Eyes caught in candlelight

there’s longing in my song

“You are my heart’s desire”

you are where I belong…

***

Lady’s Knight #OneShotWednesday

Last week for One Stop Poetry, I wrote a poem about a knight leaving his lady. I wrote  verse the following day that continued the poem. I asked my friend Sean Vessey if he would help me write the two poems into a piece of prose. We have written several things in Duet form. A Duet in writing is where one person speaks and the other person responds. It’s a fun way to write; I encourage others to give it a try. Would love to know what you think of this piece and the duet style as we hope to produce more and would appreciate the feedback.

Lady’s Knight

by Sean Vessey and Leslie Moon

I lie awake and hear the sounds.

My Knight prepares his war kit to go.

Men preparing to leave. In the darkest hour, they will proceed

His lips graze my face. I am despondent ~ he leaves me alone.

In frustration, I refuse to kiss my knight goodbye

How do I leave my darling to run into danger when all I desire is the warmth of her arms? How do I tell her that she is the sun and moon to me?

There is no sun nor moon nor stars as he departs on his steed.

Farewell giver of heart, my guide on the righteous path

I have no place to lay my head ~fair thee well

Oh my Lady Fair, my Princess of the Moon, I agonize to leave you alone without my lips

My gentle knight lover of my soul I feel your sorrow and want to hold you near.

Off I go, on my guard, so I may return to her loving arms.

Ride into the night my brave one. You forgot a kiss when you left. You have my heart guard it well

Our quest is perilous and long. Our journey hard, there lies our quest.

I dream frightful dreams. He enters the very jaws of hell. What to protect him but my love?

The beast, the vile dragon, rages burning the king’s towns. Dark consuming smoke rises in the distance. Ill tidings of things to come.

Dearest valiant one return to my arms. Do not be suffocated in the darkness be steadfast.

There is the beast dark and grim. Our archers spread out fire, arrows bounce off the beast. Knights ready at the top of my lungs I scream ~ archers fire

My dreams of you falling have weakened me. I could not go on without you?

We charge ~ lances held high. A sweep of the dragon’s claws kills five stout-hearted men.

Darling, feel my shield protecting what is most valuable to me

My steed leads now as the dragon is blinded by arrows. His claws swipe at the air ~  my lance goes in past his ribs to strike true

The darkest part of night has arrived for us all. My darling, far from me, what shall I do for they have laid siege to the castle?

Other knights follow striking well~ the dragon falls on top of two brave knights~ he is slain

They take me. I cry into the evil clutches of the night. I ache for one more glimpse of you my darling

I feel no relief ~ My true love is in peril now ~ I sense it ~her soul calls to me “Help Me”

My love I am in anguish ~ cold ~alone

Knights, I must ride. My love is in danger

What will they do? I need a ray of light and you!

“We will follow soon, ride ahead to your mistress” My horse feels my need and rides like the wind

I call into the night hoping against hope

Limbs whistle overhead as I ride. The night urges me on.

They have driven me into the deepest despair. They tell me you are dead – my heart beats no more

Oh my love, hold my heart, embrace your hopes. I ride to your call

I am lifeless. I recoil at the thought or you no longer whispering my name under the stars

My love, my heart, hold true, I come

I am limp upon the stone. What is that sound I hear? “If only…”  I weep

My Lady, My love ~I am here

What is that…? It sounds like my love.  Alas now the wind plays tricks with my heart

My love? A bleak keep is there.  I feel Her close

You are here. Our hearts call to each other. Come my darling~ my knight

I hear her forlorn cry ~ my resolve hardens~ those who hurt my lady will pay. I ride past the watchmen knocking them down. Into the keep ~ into the main hall ~  tense for battle

One exhausted Knight cannot possibly prevail against such darkness

The way to Her voice is clear. She is in the tower above

I hear heavy footsteps a voice my heart knows. He has come. Nothing matters in the world but us two. His lips on mine. Never leave my darling. Never depart

Others come, I hold her narrow door, with blade and shield

I am not afraid – he is my flesh. I will die by his side if need be

Never will we die together~ I fight~ we live for each other~ always in our hearts

He has defeated dragon and foe with one sweep of his courageous, brave heart

A sound and fury comes. The other knights are coming to our aid

He has confidence in his brother knights. He enfolds me in his arms, carries me to safety.

The Keep is ours. My love is safe. We are joined heart to heart.

As, I gaze into his eyes, I thank him with a lasting kiss. No more will we be parted

I kiss her as though it is our lips first meeting

The breeze gently plays with my hair as he sings to my heart

“My Lady”, I whisper with my heart, “my true love. I am yours always

I beckon him into the moonlight . The two of us veiled in the mist of our desire

Awakened by a dream #poetry

In the darkest hour of  night

when sleep had its strongest grasp

under the silvery glow

of a radiant moon

if you listened you would hear

a  soft fluttering

gentle steps

as she quietly slipped in

**

she neither needed nor wanted

more than the moon

she found what she sought

a chest barely rising and falling

up turned lips lit by the ripple of light

endeared to her dreamer

her hands painting on a warm canvas

***

In a startle, his eyes opened

until…

It was she

his dream

she was all he could think of when awake

she always came in his deepest sleep

their dance was magical

only witnessed by the moon

***

she slipped out quietly

contented sigh exhaled

his lips relished the memory

another perfect dream

“Jusqu’ à la prochaine fois” she whispered

as she tiptoed into the night

Not So Silent Night (#Oneshotwednesday)

“Save me” said in anguish

“oppression make it cease”

words chanted in the night

alas no days of peace

*

A world mired in deluge

fists full of abhorrent pain

A light sent into the world

groping for the common man

***

A love light was unfurled

delivered through  his hands

a desperate call into the skies

to breach the sorrows of man

*

the least tallied as a friend

a child was extolled

he came on that barren night

to save the weeping soul

The Secret of the Moon (#oneshotwednesday #poetry)

There’s a secret there

just behind the gibbous moon

her smile hides

don’t look too soon

***

Do you see her lips

the way they curl

men’s hopes and dreams

meant to unfurl

***

Bacchanal display

of love and such

all conveyed

in a moon-lit touch

***

She’ll dance and sing

for you alone

but you will never

have her heart of stone

***

Too late for you

for you’ve  consumed

imbibed the golden draught

of the elusive moon

Waiting for You #poem (One shot Wednesday)

I sat looking

Waiting

Hoping

for One last glimpse

of us

***

There we were on our bench

the picture so clear

sweet summer fragrance

eyes only for each other

***

You held me tight

beneath the maple trees

emanating warmth

even in the fall breeze

***

Words they heard

in our lover’s embrace

carefully conveyed into the night

as though they had done this before

***

You were only a breath away

whispered never “let you go”

gave me hope for tomorrow

yet  I am here all alone

***

That love so strong

had one weak link

more than tears rusted through

our loving embrace

***

So I make a vigil

before our bench

I cast my love

into the frosty night

***

Into barren arms of naked maples

and cold winter air

“please hold my dreams tight”

they hear me whisper

****

I listen for hopes of you

things not spoken my dear

perhaps no one will hear

but maybe they will get

through to you
