They Make it Look Easy #nature #snow

winter path

I marvel at winter’s bird

dance on the snow for me absurd

weightless they walk  in worst blizzard

I marvel at winter’s bird

light like a feather or whispered word

I marvel at winter’s bird

my snow dance more cold than absurd

The bird’s out in the worst of today’s storm inspired me to shovel a path. “Less work for tomorrow.”

Stay warm and safe you who share something in common with “Winter’s Bird.”

Shoukan – Less Cold #haiku #winter

snow crystals

Photos of last January flow

Sun shines on white crystals

Pulling on boots and gloves

The shovel groans

“It’s too cold. Can’t we wait?”

I look at today’s forecast

Last year’s high is today’s low

I can enjoy my pictures of snow

(my shovel agrees)

The prompt at Carpe Diem Haiku Kai is Shoukan or Less Cold. I confess I am enjoying above freezing temps.

Creature Comforts #poetry #photography #dogs

dusk clouds

Between strong legs

I look beyond the porch

waves of snow hemmed in with ice

once I would have savored cold

challenging the white waves

feeling exuberance of youth

I lay down at his feet

soaking in homey warmth

his knowing reflects in my eyes

together we dream by the fire

Today I needed to be warmed from the inside out. As I share this poem with Poet’s Pantry , I take a look into a friend’s eyes whom I dearly miss.

What We Can’t See #devotion #photography #poetry

winter castle

There is beyond the winter

beauty beneath the snow

like a shivering bulb

we know there is spring

we cannot see its bud

nor force its opening

 the sun alone

can entice the bloom

there is a beauty beyond winter

we will shed this life’s pain

 perfect magnificence

 is held in secret

an eternal spring

will one day

open its gates to the sun

beckoning us home

rose budding

“But it is written ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him…'”

1 Corinthians 2:9

We can neither see nor imagine the beauty of the place that God has fashioned for us. But we can on the weariest of days take comfort in the knowledge that such a place lies in wait just as the bulb that waits to open its face come spring. As you anticipate the warmth and beauty of spring, soak in the hope of Heaven!

Departing the Year #haiku #photography

Today our prompt at Carpe Diem is departing year, and it is extracted from Jane Reichhold’s “A Dictionary of Haiku” … it’s a nice prompt I think and it fits (of course) the time of year … Here is Jane’s example of this prompt:

as if leaves were falling

Catch a wave #winter #snowday #poetry

cold wave

Silent the waves crash

cold pillows they lay

diamond crystals tease

beckon, “come and play”

*

winter’s dance is cold

can you catch the curl

ride it into shore

caught in chilling swirl?

*

frozen is this tide

so pure and crystal light

do not be misled

it will take you for a ride

*

today we  beat the cold

warmth wrapped about our chin

riding winter’s wave

scarf lost into the wind
