Lost on the Train #Ukraine #poetry

Uneven are the clickity clack

as the wheels slide along rails

It’s hard not to echo silent  words

that I heard on that Crimean train

the subtle all but lost

except in the shudder of the cars

the steel sparking off the tracks

Clickity clack they gossip

“she was thrown from the train – here

they meant to kill her

but the people without faces knew

she was alive”

I caress the worn boards

wanting to hear and see

splinters had achieved their goal

men’s hearts pierced

women and children sent away

my eye captures what would have been a tear stain

had they not cut it out

tossed it after the woman

hoping all the time that society would forget

how to love life

and man would graze with the cattle

women would bray like the ass

children would not feel  freedom

of grass tickles their bare feet

When Time Stopped #microfiction #amwriting

I remember it like it was yesterday – the clock stopped at quarter til the hour.

I was on an outbound train going where I couldn’t remember

That was the crazy part – no one remembered what they were supposed to do next.

Looking back I’m not sure if we stopped when time stopped or if  a frozen state ensued from not knowing what to do when time stood still.

Some people stood as if in denial.

I think they were willing time to do something different.

Others, I am sure, were afraid to move as if the clock would crack and the “sameness” of life with it.

My life course changed profoundly that night.

I was bound for University. You know settle into a routine, surrounded by fellow students and books, go the requisite number of parties and games.

Each student predictably going the same general direction that was pre-ordained for us by our professors.

For me, at the moment when time stood still, something clicked like the second hand of life rebelled.

I grabbed up my things and started walking. There were a few others who independently decided to do the same thing.

We walked into the night and haven’t stopped. A few people with the same mindset have joined us along the way.

It’s curious, even after years, we notice in every town we come to there is a group of people staring at a clock with the large hand on the 9.

Today’s Daily Post (writing) prompt: For a moment today, time stands still — but you can tweak one thing while it’s stopped. What do you do?

Day’s End #haiku #photography #summer

delta day end

The train hurries on

I chance to catch days descent

from my window

From my window

sun unfurls his fiery robe

water rippled glow

nature performs in grandeur

Killer Headlines – beginning of my short #amwriting

LOCAL CREW UNCOVERS HUMAN SKULL

The headlines not only drew my attention but sent chills and a sense of foreboding into the recesses of my mind; for some reason this murder felt personal.

“Authorities revealed that the skull belongs to a San Francisco man who has been missing for 3 years. His family and his business partner were unavailable for comment. No motive has yet been unearthed. The rest of his body has yet to be discovered.”

I looked at my college bound daughter with a frown.  “What if that was Hank?” My mind whirred. Hank and I had gone to school together in the City. Recently, I had heard that he had been missing for some time. I tried to shake off the sense of foreboding; I couldnt identify it but whatever it was it was in the waiting room with us.

My daughter pulled me away from my dark ponderings. “Sounds like a great CSI case”  my daughter said dryly. I’m glad we are going home on the train tonight. That story makes me feel sick to my stomach.

Coming from my daughter, I was surprised. Kaylene was always pragmatic rarely showing emotion. All her emotion was saved for the stage where there was always high drama. And I also noticed her face had gone more pale than usual. “Hmm odd.”

I heard the train whistle in the distance; I too was grateful to be leaving for I knew this murder and the news would consume this small town.

… and here is the beginning of a story I hope to get published this fall. The story is fictional but is inspired by true events that occurred on a recent train trip to Oregon. It was too good to pass up a write…
