Lift, weight, drag
nature needs no calculation
elements take flight

birds effortless soar
seasons provide inspiration

uncontrolled the wind
my mind shifts to the stars
blinded by moon dust

One day from Japan to Guam, a P-3 crew of 12 flew into a tempest. In the face of death, some grasped for metal others crumpled straws; I held to confidence in my God. For hours we were tossed like a mere play thing; it seemed impossible that a craft could hold together against such force. As the storm lifted and just above the ocean we drifted, we beheld the most glorious image. All of nature awakened beneath a glorious, golden halo: Whales blew plumes of water, dolphins played on the surface, flying fish pirouetted in a dance with the waves.

eye of the storm
man clings to any hope
nature’s beauty emerges
I can’t paraphrase what the journey committed to God is like. For each pilgrim it is different. But this one thing I can say – no matter the sorrow, no matter the pain when the storm has passed there’s a beauty unclaimed.
The prompt at Poet’s United is “Committed.” What are you committed to no matter the cost?
“A Glimpse to the other side” is a more complete “story” that I wrote several years ago logging this day.
Today- I watched a bee
as it circled ’bout a rose
examining too close
I inhaled with my nose
Today- I watched a deer
she hid amongst the trees
clever nature seems
camera only caught the leaves
Today- I heard a child
questioning things that flew
inspired eyes so blue
I grasp knowledge anew
(and upside down at times)
Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.

bumping into you
constantly looking up
so much to see
I love the realistic haiku of Richard Wright- he gives haiku a new voice!
Please enjoy other haiku in the same stream over at Carpe Diem Haiku Special
They looked up to the sky
wondering how the birds might
Men in their minds worked
puzzling over to flight
Time after time they tried
always another glitch
falling apart at the seams
so unlike the finch
trials they persevered
eager to gain height
broken bones and wings
brothers were named Wright
higher and higher we fly
looking beyond the loon
forging a further frontier
what marvel to walk on the moon

It took commitment (day in and day out) for men who wanted to fly to build that dream. It takes (daily) commitment, a focus forward, and stamina to strive toward a relationship with our God.
“Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead.”
Philippians 3:13

First day on the job
put away the dog eared manuals
unbutton the cowling
I muse:
she’s bigger in real life than the pictures
“no, I don’t need a rag
I’m not afraid of a little grease”
my hands caress her
cutting myself on a sharp edge
first blood spilt
I smile as my blood merges with oil
reminds me when friends became pinky pals
each day was an adventure
each flight paradise
the day I got to run up all four Pratt and Whitneys*
there was no need to fly
I was airborne in ecstasy
I wonder what Columbus’ first day at the helm was like?

In many ways as an airplane mechanic in the United States Navy, I felt like I was on uncharted waters. I was one of two women in a P-3 squadron of 100 men. I never minded getting sooty or greasy, but I know it took years for the airmen to believe I was worth anything but something to look at. I enjoyed being a grease monkey when women were still doing “girl jobs.”

Learning to live by the indwelling life of Christ.
Looking ahead, without looking back (too often)
Thanks for following a cowgirl on her crazy life journey.
Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before. - Edgar Allan Poe
